HYTAC syntactic and solid polymer materials for plug assist thermoforming

HYTAC® Plug Assist Materials

Working directly with thermoformers, tool & mold makers and machine builders, CMT Materials has developed a family of products that allow our customers to utilize the right material for their specific part and sheet application. The proper plug material may lead to improved material distribution, elimination of mark-off and chill lines, elimination of thin areas, faster cycle times, better part clarity, improvements in haze and gloss, better part strength and less material and energy usage. Our HYTAC products are available in rod, sheet and block, in a wide variety of sizes. A large inventory of product on-hand normally means shipment on the day of order.

    Standard Grades
  • HYTAC-W (pdf)
    350°F Epoxy Syntactic
The industry standard white syntactic. Provides low thermal conductivity and specific heat. Works well with most standard polymer sheet such as PVC, PS and PE.

  • HYTAC-B1X (pdf)
    Engineered 350°F Thermoplastic Syntactic Foam
This light blue thermoplastic syntactic is considered by many to be the best plug material available. It machines without dust like a solid polymer, but provides the heat transfer properties of a syntactic. The toughness also allows for machining fine detail. Has been used effectively with most polymers, but works especially well with PP, PE, and PET.

  • HYTAC-WFT (pdf)
425°F Smooth Epoxy Syntactic with Teflon® for Improved Slip
This product incorporates Teflon directly into its syntactic structure for even better slip. This light green material is used in difficult applications where polymer sticking and plug residue build-up are a problem, such as PE and barrier materials.

  • HYTAC-FLX (pdf)
Tough, Flexible 350°F Epoxy Copolymer Syntactic
This thermoset copolymer syntactic is quite unique, providing the toughness and flexibility of a thermoplastic, with the thermal stability of a thermoset. It also offers the added machining benefit of little or no dust and minimal wear on tools. Further, this tough syntactic may be easily polished to a smooth surface for better part finish..

  • HYTAC-WF (pdf)
High Strength, High Clarity, 450°F Epoxy Syntactic
Developed for smooth surface plugs, this material has been used to replace Teflon® coated and high temperature plug materials. Works extremely well with APET, CPET and polyolefins and polishes to a beautiful finish. With three times the strength of standard syntactic, it has also been used in areas where plug breakage is a problem

  • Specialty Grades
  • HYTAC-A (pdf)
PEI Polymer for Clear PP Applications
Newly introduced solution for clear PP cup applications. This solid polymer may be machined to a highly polished surface to eliminate scratches and marking when final part clarity is critical.

  • HYTAC-FLXT (pdf)
Smooth-Surface and Tough 350°F Epoxy Copolymer Syntactic
Combining the toughness of the standard FLX formulation with the improved slip of our Teflon impregnated syntactic, this recently developed product offers a combination of unusual properties that allow for a smooth, highly polished surface with enough friction to insure good thickness distribution.

  • HYTAC-C (pdf)
    One Component Castable Epoxy Syntactic
For customers who would like to form their own plugs, this liquid syntactic may be poured into a mold or cavity and heat cured.

  • HYTAC-LP (pdf)
Specially Formulated Epoxy Syntactic for Large Plug Applications
When forming very large plugs, this system is used in place of the conventional process of bonding blocks or sheets. This unique approach eliminates problems associated with bonding markoff, exotherm cracking, shrinkage and mismatch materials. Most customers see a significant cost and weight reduction when compared to bonding techniques.

  • HYTAC-Rx (pdf)
The newest and most exciting addition to CMT's HYTAC family of high performance syntactic materials.
Developed to meet the specific demands of the pharmaceutical packaging industry, HYTAC-Rx is available in both a high-slip and a high-stick formulation. These material options provide the manufacturer with greater control over the thermoforming process, and the ability to optimize plug assist tooling for better material distribution and performance. HYTAC-Rx is the first and only material designed specifically for pharmaceutical blister tooling. HYTAC-Rx syntactic materials are food contact grade and are listed in Drug Master File (DMF) number 21370.

  • HYTAC-B (pdf)
Engineered Polymer with Excellent Heat Resistance
A solid polymer, this product is recommended as a replacement for Delrin , nylon or other commonly used plug polymers while providing better heat resistance. Used mainly in shallow draw applications where sheet distribution is not critical.
